Abstract

This research paper entitled Ideational Meanings in Elizabeth Laird’s “ Anna and The Fighter” has two objectives: first, to find out the system of transitivity recognized in Elizabeth Laird’s “Anna and the Fighter”, and second, to construe how the field of the discourse is built. In analyzing this study, the writer uses the theory of functional grammar introduced by M.A.K Halliday. This study is a qualitative research. The data of this research paper is a short story from Elizabeth Laird. They were segmented into clauses, and were classified and identified in the transitivity system of functional grammar. The result of this study indicates that in this short story there are 99 clauses. The most dominate process are material process (37,37%) that occurs in 37 clauses. Thus, actors (23,42%) that occurs in 37 clauses as agentive participants dominate over the other agentive participants. The most dominant types of circumstance are location of spatial (43,20%) that occurs in 22 clauses. The field of the discourse is described in (a) experiental domain about one girl, she is Anna who wants to visit her aunt in Naira. In her trip, she missed the station so she was lost, then an ugly man wants to help her to meet with her aunt. (b) short term goal is that Anna will visit her aunt. (c) long term goal is that someone must be careful when she or he is on a trip so that she or he does not miss the destination and should not judge a person by his appearance.
