Abstract

This study entitled The Conflict as rereflected in James M. Barrie’s the Peter Pan as; a structuralism study.The writer applies structuralism by Jonathan Culler to analyze the novel. The writer conducted the study with the purpose to find out the characteristic of Peter Pan, to find out the conflicts of Peter Pan and to find out Peter Pan. The data were analyzed on the theory of structuralism by Culler to find out the characteristic and personality of Peter Pan as the main character in the novel. The writer found the characteristic of Peter Pan, the conflicts of Peter Pan and Wendy as a reflected analyzed applying Jonathan Structuralism. The characteristics of Peter Pan are Adventuring, Ambition, and Mighty men. External conflict of Peter Pan is found between Peter Pan and Tinker Bell who is that she never loved him. The effect of this conflict Peter Pan is in love with a "dream" of Tinker Bell and that dream is unattainable. The second external conflict is between Peter Pan and Wendy. The effect of this conflict is disappointed. Internal conflict of Peter Pan is he is only afraid with a knight who wants to attack him. Novel is a simple one however the events that occur within the plot are always most invigorating. The responder is always informed of the events clearly as the narrator informs the responder with a humorous adult tone towards the ignorance of the children.The novel reflect the author’s views on the world however he has used the morals and values of his society in the setting of the novel to assist with carrying his message across to the responder; that all children must grow up or reality will simply bite them in the bottom. The benefit of this research is it provides and give inspiration for me about the meaning of life, meaning of a family and a friend.
