Abstract

Jati, Hanung Nurkhikmah, 2014. “Turn- taking mechanism in the conversation of Hitam Putih talk show “part all about ocd( obsessive corbuzier’s diet)”. A Thesis, Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies, Undergraduate Degree (S1) of University of Stikubank Semarang. Supervisor: Katharina Rustipa, Dr., DRA, M.PD Key Words: turn taking system, utterances, signaling Unit People in the world need to communicate with other people. To communicate, people use language as a means of communication. Communication needs to be maintained in order to make interactions among people run for a long time. One way to maintain communication is turn-taking mechanism. Turn taking is a basic form of organization in conversation that organizes who speaks, when and for how long. So the writer chooses turn taking mechanism as the topic of the thesis. The thesis is entitled “Turn- taking mechanism in the conversation of Hitam Putih talk show “part all about ocd( obsessive corbuzier’s diet)”. The writer chooses Hitam Putih Talk show part “all about OCD (obsessive corbuzier‟s diet)” as the object of the study because the writer wants to analyze and explain how turn taking mechanism occurs in conversation. Besides, the writer also describes the realization of turn signaling unit. From the findings and discussion, the writer concludes the turn signaling units in the talk show. They are backchannels that consist of positive feedback and negative feedback, overlap and gaps. The frequency of positive feedback is 172 units (89,1%) and negative feedback is 14 units ( 7,3%), overlaps as many as 3 units (1,6%), gaps as many as 4 units (2%). From the data frequency, the participants often use positive feedback to respond the other turn than negative feedback. The other utterances found in the conversation, are hesitation, short prepositional utterances, longer actual utterances, and failed attempt utterances.
