A Syntactical Analysis of Adverbial Phrase Found In Barack Obama‟s Address To The Nation On Syria September, 10 2013 A thesis, Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies, Undergraduate Degree (S1) of the University of Stikubank Semarang. Supervisor: Agnes Widyaningrum, S.E., SPd. M.Pd Key words : Syntax, Adverbial Phrase, Barack Obama‟s Address The thesis entitled A Syntactical Analysis of Adverbial Phrase Found In Barack Obama‟s Address To The Nation On Syria September, 10 2013 has two objectives. First is to describe what types of adverbial phrases found in Barack Obama‟s speeh. The second is to find out the function of adverbial phrases are applied in Barack Obama‟s speech. The study attempts to analyze and indentify the adverbial phrase used in Barack Obama‟s speech. An adverb phrase is a subordinate phrase used to modify a verb, adjective or adverb in the main phrase. Every adverb phrase is introduced by a subordinating conjunction. An adverb phrase tells when, where, why,how, to what extent, or ho much about the word it modifies. There are two common ways to analyze a sentence syntactically namely bracketing and tree diagram. Bracketing shows the constituent structure but omits information about type of constituent. Therefore to represent the kinds of constituent structure we can do it by labeling each bracket with a suitable subscript. Another way to analyze in syntactical way is using tree diagram. Almost all people prefer to use these methods namely bracketing and labeling because it is easier. The research uses descriptive qualitative research because this study describes the characteristics of adverbs realized in Barack Obama‟s speech. There are 52 adverbial phrases found in Barack Obama‟s Address. The characteristics of adverbial phrase found in Barack Obama‟s speech namely 30 adverbs phrase of time, 12 adverbs phrase of place and 10 adverbs phrase of manner. The function of adverbial phrase applied in Barack Obama‟s Address are 39 to modify verb, 3 to modify adjective, 10 to modify other adverb. th th
