Abstract

xii ABSTRACT Wibawa, Satria Mukti. 2016. Errors in the EFL Interlanguage as Reflected in the Recounts Written by the Evening Students of Semester Four of FBIB Stikubank University Semarang in Academic Year 2014/2015. A Research Paper, Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies of Stikubank University Semarang, Supervised by Agnes Widyaningrum, SE, S.Pd, Second language learners, which in this case are students of FBIB Stikubank University Semarang in Academic Year 2014/2015, tend to produce interlanguage errors when they try to use English in their written texts, especially recount. This research attempts to find the interlanguage which is produced in each sentence in a form of recount text written by each student and the area of it. Its analysis is based on the grammatical rules. Besides, this research also attempts to find out whether or not the students produce errors in creating a recount text based on its generic structure. To get the data, eight students were asked to create recount texts, and then the texts were copied and segmented into sentences, so that they can be analyzed. In analyzing the data, the researcher applied six stages-methods: (1) segmenting the texts into sentences, (2) identifying sentences containing errors and analyzing the generic structure, (3) categorizing the interlanguage errors based on their grammatical categories and based on their problem areas, (4) interpreting the categorized data, (5) tabulating the findings, and (6) interpreting the findings. For the findings, on the grammatical categories, the interlanguage mostly produced in tense (12.67%), article (10.33%), choice of word (10.33%), verb phrase (10.00%), and preposition (10.00%). Besides, on the problem areas, interlanguage errors are mostly found in the area of syntax (47.33%). They are also found in lexicon (29.00%), and morphology (23.67%). It indicates the students have not fully mastered English yet. However, different from the other findings, the findings of the analysis of the text based on its generic structure, which does not show any error, indicates that the students has been capable enough to construct a recount text. Key words: interlanguage, written text, sentence, problem area, grammatical category, generic structure
