Abstract

This study analyzes the use of code switching as a communication strategy in Slumdog Millionaire‟s movie. This study focuses on the dialogues in the movie. The writer found out that code-switching in this movie had different background and language to communicate. In this research, the writer identified the uniqueness of code-switching and classified their language switched, type and the function in communication. The writer used qualitative research, it means the study describes the phenomena of code switching contained in the data. The data and the theories of this research were taken from Internet websites (by downloading the movie and the transcript). The result of this research showed that there were5 languages being switched: (1) Fifty two (52) codes switched from English to Hindi or Hindi to English. (2) Four (4) codes switched from English to Greek. (3) One (1) code switched from English to Arabic. (4) One (1) code switched from Hindi to Arabic. (5) One (1) code switched from English to French. There were also 3 types of code switching found in this movie: (1) Inter-sentential Code switching: 10 (8.77%), (2) Intra-sentential Code switching: 56 (49.12%), and (3) External Code switching: 48 (42.11%). In addition, there were 5 characters who switched the codes, they are: Prem 54 (47.37%), Jamal 27 (23.68%), the Inspector 15 (13.16%), Salim 16 (14.04%), and Srinivas 2 (1.75%). Lastly, there were 5 functions of codes being switched: (1) for communication more effectively: 14 (13.46%), (2) for the ease of communication: 45 (43.27%), (3) for emphasizing a point: 18 (17.31%), (4) for conveying precious meaning: 2 (1.92%), (5) and for capturing attention: 25 (24.04%). The writer concluded that the most communication strategies used in this movie are English-Hindi for language switched, Intra-sentential for type of code switching and for the ease of communication as the function, these are the mostly used by Prem as the host.
