Abstract

This research attempts to analyze the Appraisal System in The Jakarta Post online newspaper. The thesis entitled ‗Appraisal System Recognized in The Jakarta Post’s Editorial “Getting Ready for Zika” on September 3rd, 2016’ has two research questions. They are (1) What Appraisal devices are recognized in the text? (2) How are the readers positioned in the text? This research used qualitative method. Hence, the data were construed by employing categorical techniques on the basis of Appraisal theory proposed by Martin and White (2005). The researcher found three kinds of Appraisal System, those are: Engagement has two systems, they are: Mono-glossic and Heteroglossic. In this analysis, the researcher did not find any single use of Mono-glossic. The Hetero-glossic system is divided into Dialogic Contraction (46.7%) and Dialogic Expansion (53.3%). In the terms of Attitude, there are three sub-system: Affect (22.7%), Judgment (22.7%) and Appreciation (54.6%). The last sub-system is Graduation system which consists of Force (85.7%) and Focus (14.3%). Based on the analysis of Appraisal System, the readers are positioned as the people who accept the editor‘s valuation about the Zika virus. xiv
