Abstract

The research attemptsto analyze the rank scale of the declarative sentences in a short story. The thesis entitled “An Analysis of Rank Scale Used in the Declarative Sentences found in ‘The Ghost’ Short Story: Syntactical Perspectives”’has aresearch questions. It is What syntactical patterns are used in the declarative sentences of “The GhostShort story”? An article written by William D. O’Connorwas downloaded from www.gutenberg.org . It was analyzedused rank scaletheory proposed by Aarts (1997). The goals of this study are to find out types of rank scale and to explain the declarative sentence found in The Ghost short story using bracketing system to analyzeit. To reach the goals the writer used a descriptive qualitative research as the method of data analysis in this thesis, because the data are descriptively analyzed. The writer used library and documentation study because it is very useful to obtain the data accurately. From the theory there are four levelsin the rank scale formation, (1) The Word- level, (2) The Phrase- level, (3) The Clause-level and (4) The sentence- level. From the analysis, the writer found 53declarative sentences ruled applied in The Ghostshort story. The data would be explained theoretically and process of Rank Scale would be described by means of bracketing The sentence structure rules found in The Ghost short story such asin sentence “He reach the door” isS→ NP. VP, NP is constructed from Pronoun (He). VP is constructed from Verb(reach) and PP (reach the door). PP is constructed from Preposition(the) and Noun (door).
