Abstract

This research attempts to construe the Appraisal System in The Jakarta Post online newspaper. The thesis entitled ‘Appraisal System Recognized in The Jakarta Post’s Editorial “The ASEAN Cage” on July 20 th , 2011’ has three research questions. They are (1) What Appraisal devices are recognized in the text? (2) What may be the most dominant Appraisal device(s) found in the text? (3) How are the readers positioned in the text? This research used qualitative method. Therefore, the data were construed by employing categorical techniques on the basis of Appraisal theory proposed by Martin and White (2005). The researcher found three kinds of Appraisal System, those are: Attitude which consists of Affect (3.03%), Judgment (45.45%) and Appreciation (51.52%). Engagement has two systems, they are: Mono-glossic and Hetero-glossic. In this analysis, the researcher did not find any single use of Mono-glossic. The Heteroglossic system divided into Dialogic Contraction (58.3%) and Dialogic Expansion (41.7%). The last sub-system that is Graduation system consists of Force (97.8%) and Focus (2.2%). The most dominant Appraisal device found in the editorial is Graduation (44.1%) system. Based on the analysis of Appraisal System, the readers are positioned as the people who accept the editor’s assessment about the condition between Indonesia and ASEAN.
