Abstract

This thesis investigates three kinds of turn taking strategies that is used by dominant speakers in the movie Titanic. If a conversation is held, turn taking must take place which means that there must be changes of the speaker’s turn during the conversation. The writer derives the turn taking strategy from Stenstrom’s classification (1994) that consists of taking the turn strategy, holding the turn strategy and yielding the turn strategy. The writer chooses the film Titanic as the source of this research because the story is very popular and also turn taking is found in the conversations. In this research, the writer uses both qualitative and quantitative research because the result of the quantitative research can support the final result of this research. The source of this research is only the main conversation between the main characters in Titanic. Through the analysis, the writer finds out that taking the turn has the highest occurrence. Moreover, the male speaker is the most dominant speaker between the main characters and he often uses uptake to dominate the female speaker.
