Abstract

This thesis entitled Interpersonal Meaning Negotiated in Oprah Winfrey Show Broadcast on February 2, 2011 has two objectives. The first is to explain the Mood system in the dialogue and the second is to construe the Tenor of the Discourse in the dialogue. Systemic Functional Grammar is used in this thesis because it describes not only the form but also the functional term; in focuses on the purposes and uses of language. Mood is an element that carries Interpersonal meaning during the communication. It is made from the combination of subject, which the speaker rests his/her case in exchange of communication and finite, which is the expression of interpersonal meaning. In this research, the data are in form of spoken text which is realized in written text that is an interview script. The writer uses descriptive research method, in which the data were described systemically to get an accurate and actual result. The data consist of 66 clauses. The Mood types of clauses in the interview scripts are: 50 (82 %) Declarative, 8 (13,1 %) Interrogative, 3 (4,9 %) Imperative. The remainders of those three mood types are 5 (7, 6 %) non finite clauses. The Mood Adjuncts of clauses in the interview script are: 2 (25%) Probability, 1 (12,5%) Usuality, 4 (50%) Time and 1 (12,5%) Polarity. The agentive roles of the interview are the host (Oprah Winfrey) and the guest (Jennifer Aniston) as indicated by the addressee you and the addresser I. The status is equal as several clauses are shown that the participants are demanding and giving information to each other. The social distance is minimal.
