Abstract

This thesis is an exploratory study of stating the Statement of Purpose realized in emails written by Indonesian and American employees. In realizing the Statement of Purpose, this thesis attempts to study the influence of the culture since communication system is built by culture and appears as a language. In Kaplan’s study, the language then were drawn into five pattern which are English, Semitic, Oriental, Romance, and Russian thought pattern. Those thought pattern symbolized characters of each countries classification. The data were collected from several emails and the emails were then retyped in Microsoft Office Word 2003 for ease of text fragmenting during the process of analysis. Qualitative method is then used to analyze the data further since it tends to observe in field directly and using non – statistical calculation. Moreover, qualitative method focuses more on the researcher’s total five senses participation in the field to reveal the social conspicuous. The study reveals that seventeen indicators are used and nine of them mostly appear in the emails written by Indonesian employees. They are asking addressee’s condition (4,26 %), delivering thanks (2,13 %), informing (6,38 %), promoting (2,13 %), offering discussion (2,13 %), preventing misunderstanding (2,13 %), describing profile (2,13%), delivering sympathy (2,13 %), and stating regret (2,13%), Those mostly appear in the emails written by American employees are claiming (4,26 %), confirming (4,26 %), emphasizing claiming (2,13%), introducing (2,13%), expressing surprised (2,13 %) and the same total were positioned by these indicators: greeting (21,27% ), asking (8,51%), and signing off (21,27%). The emails as the data were analyzed based on the theory of Genre, particularly the part which discusses the staging and how the social purpose is divided. The results of the study indicate that: 1. Indonesian employees often use chit chat paragraph before deliver their main purpose. 2. In Kaplan’s thought pattern, Indonesian employees have an oriental thought pattern and American employees tend to be in English thought pattern. The study recommends that the readers need to learn more in changing or making many various words of Statement of Purpose for future development in respect to writing emails.
