Abstract
The thesis entitled the illocutionary acts realized in Roald Dahl‟s short story “Man from the South”. In this thesis, the researcher would like to identify the meaning of utterances within dialogue in terms of speech act. The research is aimed to finding out the taxonomies of acts realized in Roald Dahl‟s short story “Man from the South”, and explaining the reasons for the characters to use their own selected illocutionary acts. The type of illocutionary acts realized in 132 utterances, there are 34 representative utterances: 25 information (18.93%), 6 statements (4.54 %) and 3 conclusions (2.27 %); 54 directive utterances: 7 commands (5.30%), 3 request (2.27 %), 30 question (22.27 %), 3 suggestion (2.27 %) and 11 tell (8.33%); 12 commissive utterance: 1 promise (0.75 %), 10 accept (7.57 %) and 1 pledge (0.75 %); 11 Expressive utterance: 1 disappointed ( 0.75 %), 4 like (3.03 %), 4 dislike (3.03%), 1 displeasure (0.75%), 1 Impossible (0.75%), 1 Possibility (0.75 %), 7 Certainty (5.30 %), 3 Regret (2.27 %), 2 Pleasure (1.51 %), 4 Thanking (3.03%) and 2 Apologize (1.51%); 2 Declarative utterance; 2 denial (1.52%). The illocutionary act most frequently realized is question (22.27 %). It means one of the mean characters related to the dialogue want to make sure something that he believes to be right or to be the case or not, and he wants the hearer to agree with their statement.
