Abstract
This research examines the tenor found in Obama’s Address on The Death of Osama Bin Laden. The writer is interested to identify Barack Obama’s address because he has good rhetorical strategies which can affect, persuade and inform for general community in different ways. In addition, the writer uses Obama’s speech since there are many clauses in different sentences. The theory proposed by Halliday (2004) was used as the framework to analyze the tenor recognized in Barack Obama’s address of Osama Bin Laden Death. This research has three object of the study that focus on Mood Types, Modal Auxiliary and Tenor of The Discourse. As research is descriptive and qualitative in nature, the data were analyzed by using five steps: first downloading address, second segmenting address into clauses, third putting the segmented into mood pattern, fourth identifying and categorizing mood elements into their mood system. Finally, construing the tenor of the discourse. The results of the study show that all clauses in Obama’s address are major clauses mostly which has percentage of 97,8% and minor clauses has percentage of 2,2%. All mood types in Obama’s address are declarative mood. They are two types of declarative mood ; unmarked and marked. The frequency of unmarked declarative are 90 clauses (97,8%) and marked declarative are 2 clauses (2,2%). The modal auxiliary which is mostly used in Obama’s address is “ will ”. It has percentage of 41,6%. The status of relation between the speaker and the listeners is unequal because the speaker just explained information and his feeling for the success of United States operation that had killed Osama Bin Laden and the listeners must understand what speaker said. In addition, there is a social gap between the speaker and the listener. The social distance between them is maximal because they do not interact each other directly and the speaker used formal language.
