Abstract

Zuliana, Novi. 2014. Theme – Rheme Realized in Sally Berneathy’s Friendship, Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies, Undergraduate Programs of the University of Stikubank Semarang, Supervisor: Dr. Katharina Rustipa, M.Pd. Keyword: ideational theme, textual theme, interpersonal theme, rheme This research examines the Theme-Rheme found in “Friendship” short story by Sally Berneathy. The objectives of the study are to identify the types of theme found in the short story by Sally Berneathy “Friendship” and to explain how mode of the discourse is created in the short story by Sally Berneathy “Friendship”. The theory proposed by Gerot and Wignell ( 1995) was used as the framework to analyze the types of Theme in short story by Sally Bernethy “Friendship”. The object of the study was analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The research result show that there are three types of theme in the short story. They are ideational or topical theme ( 67% ) , textual theme ( 32% ) and interpersonal theme ( 1% ) . Topical theme consists of unmarked topical theme ( 91% ) and marked topical theme ( 9% ) . The mode of the discourse created in the short story is sharing information to the reader. The role of language is constitutive and the type of interaction is monologue. Medium in the text is written, channel in the text is graphic, and rhetorical thrust is informative.
