Abstract

This research attempts to construe the Appraisal System in Malaysian Prime Minister Official Speech. The thesis entitled ‘Appraisal Values as Recognized in Some Official Speech Delivered by the Malaysian Prime Minister With Respect to the Missing of MH370 Malaysian Airplane’ has two research questions. They are (1) What is the most dominant appraisal device found in the official speech delivered by the Malaysian Prime Minister with respect to the missing of MH370 Malaysian Airplane? (2) How are the readers positioned by the official speech delivered by the Malaysian Prime Minister with respect to the missing of MH370 Malaysian Airplane? This research used qualitative method. Therefore, the data were construed by employing categorical techniques on the basis of Appraisal theory proposed by Martin and Rose (2003). The theory of Appraisal from Martin and Rose 2003 is divided appraisal into three categories i.e. Attitude, Engagement and Graduation. The result of this study is that the writer found 48 kinds of Engagement, consisting 3 monoglossic, and 45 heteroglossics that consist of 21 projections, 16 modalities and 8 concession; 47 kinds of Attitude that consist of 4 affects, 15 judgments and 32 appreciations; and 6 kinds of Graduations in which 0 Focus and 6 Forces. The most dominant Appraisal device found in the speech is Engagement (48) system. Based on the analysis of Appraisal System, the reader are positioned as the people who accept his argument without giving back. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak only gave the latest information about the missing plane, tried to make the image of Malaysia better in international world and explain the responsibilities of the Malaysia about the MH370 Malaysian airplane.
