Abstract
This research attempts to analyze the allophonic differences of Karo Language Dialects in Regency of Karo, North Sumatra. The writer explores the allophonic differences of Karo Language in the three districts.The aims of this study are to describe the allophonic dialect differences of Karo language. In this thesis the writer describes allophonic dialect differences in three distrcits of Karo Gugung, Karo Gunung and Karo Jahe-jahe. The data that were taken from primary and secondary sources. The method of data collections were observation method, interview method and introspective method. To analyze the data, the writer used equalizing and distributional method. The method of data presentation used formal and informal method. In Karo language there are 6 vowels, 15 consonants, 18 diphthong and 7 triphtongs. In Karo language, there are vowel variation such as vowels /i/ and /ɪ/, /a/ and /æ/, /ʊ/ and /ᴐ/, /ʊ/ and /ǝ/, /ǝ:/ and /i:/. There are also vowel variations to be diphthong variations like; /e/ to be /ai/, /o/ changes to /au/. In Karo language was found diphthong variation changes to triphtong variations, such as; /oi/ to be /aui/, /io/ to be /iau/, /ue/ to be /uai/ and /uei/, /ie/ to be /iai/ and /iei/. In Karo language there are some vowels that are pronounced but they are not written, like; /a: /æ/, /i:/, /ɪ/ /e:/, /ǝ:/, /ᴐ/. The allophonic dialect difference occurred in the three districts irregularly.
