Abstract

vi Sumponogati, Sarah. 2015. Illocutionary Acts Produced by the Main Characters in Khaled Hosseini’s Novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns”. A research paper, English Department, Undergraduate Program of Stikubank University Semarang. Supervisor: Drs. Liliek Soepriatmadji, M.Pd This research paper is entitled Illocutionary Acts Produced by the Main Characters in Khaled Hosseini‟s Novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns”. This study is aimed at finding the taxonomies of acts and the speech functions of the main characters in Khaled Hosseini's novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns". This research is designed in descriptive qualitative. The procedure of analyzing the utterances is based on the criteria proposed by Searle (1997) and Schiffrin (1994). The taxonomies of acts are performed in 754 utterances namely 300 representative utterances: 138 information (46%), 3 description (1%), 11 assertion (3.7%), 10 conclusion (3.3%), and 138 statements (46%); 305 directive utterances: 149 questions (48.8%), 47 requests (15.4%), 60 commands (19.7%), 10 warnings (3.3%), 9 offers (2.9%), 13 suggestion (4.3%), 11 entreaties (3.6%), and 6 invitation (2%); 63 commissive utterances: 42 promises (66.7%), 10 refusal (15.9%), 3 threats (4.7%), 6 pledges (9.5%), and 2 blessings (3.2%); 83 expressive utterances: 8 gratitude (9.6%), 14 apologizes (16.9%), 12 regrets (14.5%), 17 likes (20.5%), 2 disappointment (2.4%), 16 certainties (19.3%), 6 dislikes (7.2%), 2 condolences (2.4%), and 6 possibilities (7.2%); and finally, 3 declarative utterances: 2 denial (66.7%) and 1 declaration (33.3%).The utterances produced by the main characters are mostly using directive. It means that the speakers want to ask something to the hearer. Furthermore, the types of speech function mostly uttered by each main character of the novel are statements. It means the speaker wants to give information to the hearer by stating something. Keywords: Illocutionary acts, speech function, utterances, novel.
