Abstract

This research paper presents Anton Chekov‟s The Death of a Government Clerk. The story tells about Ivan Dmitritch Tchervyakov. Ivan as the main character is described as a a clerk in the government department, polite, struggle, a married man, honest and sensitive. The analysis began by describing main character, conflict experienced by the main character, setting and the influence of society pressures the main character. The researcher is interested to analyze them because there are psychological aspects the main character and influence his life. The library research method is applied to make scientific discussion. The psychological approach is used to get better understanding in the characters‟ thought, personality and behavior. After analyzing the short story, the result indicates that Ivan is described as a static character. In the beginning, he is described as a clerk in the government department. He has a good position. Second, he is a polite man. It can be seen when he is sneezing; he closes his nose directly with handkerchief like a noble. Third, he is struggle. When he realizes that he makes a mistake to the General, Brizhalov, he never gives up to apologize. Fourth, he is a married man. It can be proved; when he comes to home, he tells his wife about the accident. Fifth, he is honest. He tells that he does not sneeze intentionally and explains that Brizzhalov can trust him. The last is sensitive. He is easily to get frustrated. In the end of the story, Tchervyakov‟s sensitive feeling makes him depressed and die. He is always sensitive and he cannot accept the reality easily.
