Abstract
xiv Novshaputri, Engelika Happy. 2015. “Illocutionary Acts Performed in Maroon 5‟s Album „V‟ Song Lyrics. A research paper, English Department, Undergraduated Program of Stikubank University Semarang. Supervisor: Drs. Liliek Soepriatmadji, M.Pd. This research paper is entitled Illocutionary Acts Performed in Maroon 5‟s Album „V‟ Song Lyrics. In this research, the researcher would like to identify the meaning and function of utterances within twelve song of Maroon 5‟s Album „V‟ in term of speech act. It has objectives, which are aimed to find out the taxonomies of illocutionary acts and speech functions performed in Maroon 5‟s Album „V‟ Song Lyrics. Then, the analysis is based on pragmatics that is to discuss illocutionary acts. In order to analyze the lyrics, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method. The taxonomies of illocutionary acts are performed in 322 utterances namely; 215 assertive utterances: 205 fact (63.7%), 4 suggesting (1.2%), 6 swearing (1.9%); 75 directives utterances: 19 asking (5.9%), 2 challenging (0.6%), 47 requesting (14.6%), 7 suggesting (2.2%); 30 commisive utterances: 26 committing (8.1%), 2 promising (0.6%), 2 refusing (0.6%); 2 expressive utterances: 1 joy (0.3%), 1 sorrow (0.3%). The most dominant type of illocutionary act used there is fact (63.7%). It means that the speaker wants to show something that has really occurred or which is actually the case. Then, the type of speech functions are performed in 322 utterances namely: 11 offer utterances (3.4%), 35 request utterances (10.9%), 22 question utterances (6.8%), 254 statement utterances (78.9%). It is seen that statement utterances (78.9%) are mostly performed. It means the speaker wants to give information to the hearer by stating something to the hearer.
