Abstract

Wahyuningrum, NurRofi’ah. 2016. The Cohesive Devices Recognized in Jokowi’s Address at the APEC CEO Summit on November 10th, 2014 in Beijing, China. A research paper, English Department, Undergraduate Program of University of Stikubank Semarang. Supervisor: Dra. WiennyArdriyati,M.Pd. The research deals with cohesive devices in Jokowi’s address. The research paper is entitled ‘The Cohesive Devices Recognized in Jokowi’s Address at the APEC CEO Summit on November 10th, 2014 in Beijing, China’ has two objectives of study. They are (1) What are Cohesive Devices employed in Jokowi’s address? (2) What are the frequencies of each type of cohesive devices occurred in Jokowi’s address? This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. Therefore, the data were construed by employing techniques on the basis of Cohesive Devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The writer found two kinds of cohesions; those are grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. Grammatical cohesion has four types of devices, they are: reference (58.24%), substitution (0%), ellipsis (0%), and conjunction (41.76%). Reference has three types, they are: personal reference (52.35%), demonstrative reference (5.29%) and comparative reference (0.59%). Conjunction has three types, they are: additive conjunction (17.06%), adversative conjunction (1.76%), causal conjunction (14.71%) and temporal conjunction (8.24%). And Lexical cohesion has two devices, they are: reiteration (83.02%) and collocation (16.98%). Reiteration has two types; they are repetition (81.13%) and metonymy (1.89%).
