Abstract

ABSTRACT Research paper entitled Code Switching Used by the Main Character of RadityaDika‟sCinta Brontosaurus Short Story, contains utterances concerning code switching events occurred in the short story. The researcher analyzed the types of code, the function of code switching and the communicative purpose of using code switching in the short story. To analyze it, the researcher used a qualitative-descriptive method. There are several steps involved in analyzing the data, e.g. by collecting all the data based on the characters in the short story, and then the data are classified according to the type and function of each, then the data are interpreted. Analysis focused on the types, the function, the communicative purpose of code switching occurred in the short story. As a results of the study, the researchers found three types of codes namely Tag Switching, Inter-sentential code switching, and Intra-sentential code switching. In addition, the researcher found five functions of code switching in the short story those are, to communicate more effectively, to ease communication, to convey precious meaning, to emphasize a point and to capture attention. Intra-sentential is the dominant type of code switching and for the function and communicative purpose of the code switching in the short story is to ease communication. The result of the research shows that there are many cases of code switching found in the literary works, especially short stories written by Indonesian author.
