Abstract

This research examines the tenor found in short story entitled “Harrison Bergeron” written by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. The writer is interested in identifing this short story because in this short story occurs a lot of different mood types since there are many clauses in different sentences. The theory proposed by Halliday (2004) was used as the framework to analyze the tenor recognized in “Harrison Bergeron” short story. This research has two objects of the study that focus on Mood types and Tenor of the Discourse. As this research is descriptive and qualitative in nature, the data were analyzed by using six steps: first browsing the text in the website, second reading the text, third segmenting the clause into unit of analysis, fourth putting the segmented clause into mood pattern, fifth identifying and categoryzing mood elements into their mood system. Finally, the writer construes the tenor of the discourse. The results of the study show that all clauses in “Harrsion Bergeron” short story are major clauses which have percentge of 91,51% and minor clauses have percentage of 8,49%. The mood types in “Harrison Bergeron” short story are declarative positive mood with percentage 86,83%, declarative negative 6,29%, imperative 3%, and interogative 3,9%. There are two mood types in “Harrison Bergeron” short story: unmarked and marked. The frequency of unmarked are 286 clauses (85,63%) and marked are 48 clauses (14,37%). The status relation between the speaker and listeners is unequal because the speaker just gives command to the listeners without knowing who the listeners are and the listeners must do what the speaker says. In addition, there is a social gap among the speaker and the listeners. The social distance between them is maximal because they did not interact each other before.
