Abstract

This research paper entitled Error Analysis of English Vowels Pronunciation (A Case Study of the Fifth Semester English Department Students of Academic Year 2016/2017 of Stikubank University Semarang is aimed to know the reasons why students cannot pronounce well and find vowels that students cannot differentiate. Students when are learning foreign language which is English, they always make errors in its process. Errors can be analyzed by comparing the target language and mother language of learners. To analyze the error of English vowels sounds and analyze the reason why error occurred, the researcher made list of English words that have vowels sounds to be examined for nine students of fifth semester. Therefore this research is qualitative research. The results of this research shows that errors occurred on almost of the given data. These errors happened because of the similar written of English words, the existence of English words that have some sounds and their mother tongue which is Bahasa (pronounced the written word). Those are the main reason of error occurred. In addition, students cannot differentiate and still confuse to pronounce vowel [i:] [ɛit] [ɛ] and [ә] for letter e, ee, vowel sound [ɛ] and [æ], sound [ɛ] and [ә] for letter e.
