Abstract
This research paper entitled ―Turn – Taking Produced by the Host and the Guest in ―The Ellen Degeneres Show‖ Broadcast on Lifetime Asia Channel in November 16 th 2016 is aimed to know the organization of turn taking by employing turn allocation unit, turn construction unit and turn taking strategy that are used by the host and the guest in The Ellen Degeneres Show during interview. In this thesis, the reseacher used the recording data of Ellen Degeneres Show that was served on youtube as a sample, then data was changed into transcript and segmenting the transcript into the unit of analysis using qualitative methods. The results of the study indicate that turn allocation units consist of current speaker selects next speaker: 1) Selects a different speaker as many as 19 units, 1) current speaker selects self as many as 105 units and, 3) next speaker selects self as many as 24 units. Turn construction units consists of a single lexical item as many as 15 units, a phrase as many as 4 units, a clause as many as 58 units and a sentence as many as 71 units. The turn taking strategy consists of taking the turn as many as 57 units, holding the turn as many as 43 units and yielding the turn as many as 18 units. Through the analysis, the writer finds out that current speaker selects next speaker as the highest occurance in turn allocation units, a clause as the highest occurance in turn construction units and taking the turn as the highest occurance in turn taking strategies.
