Abstract
Industry characteristics, culture and business strategy implemented by a company is a
unique combination that forms a company and influence Company’s ability to learn, thus the
topic of this research is “Analysis on the influence of industry characteristics, company’s
culture and business strategy on organizational learning capability at Plaza Millenium
Supermarket and Department Store”. This is an explanatory research and survey research.
Employee’s perception on industry characteristics are positive, employee’s perception on
business strategy – differentiation is more positive than on cost leadership, the dominant
culture is market culture, the dominant learning style are competency acquisitions and
continuous improvement. The company experiences learning disabilities in the form of
homogeneity, tight coupling, paralysis, superstitious learning, and diffusion deficiencies.
This research shows that company’s culture significantly influence overall organizational

learning capability and the other independent variables did not have significant influence.
Organizational learning capability is a process that had to be done continuously. This
process is built from inside, not the outside, and this process must be supported by all
elements of company not just certain divisions. Concept used in well established company
had different effects on local company.
