Abstract

This research paper entitled Figurative Expressions Found in Online Nike‟s Shoes Advertisement. This study has two research questions, they are what kinds of figurative expressions are found in online Nike‟s shoes advertisement and what are the meanings implied by the presence of figurative expressions found in the Nike‟s shoes advertisement. This study was conducted to determine the types of figurative expressions found in the Nike advertisements and meanings implied by the presence of figurative expressions found in the advertisements. The analysis is based on the theory about figurative expressions by Lakoff and Johnson (2003), Jay (2003) and Colston (2015). The study is designed in descriptive qualitative research. The results showed that there are nine types of figurative expressions, namely, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification, sarcasm, idiomatic expressions, rhetorical questions, indirect requests and contextual expressions. The most frequently used figurative expression type is hyperb33ole as 17 (47.73%). There are some reasons why hyperbole becomes the dominant type in the Nike‟s online advertisement. First, hyperbole has a function to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression. The other reasons of using hyperbole are to clarify and emphasize meanings. Then, the second most common type of figurative expression is metaphor as many as 10 (26.31%). The reasons why metaphor used in the Nike advertisement is because metaphor can create powerful or stronger impression to the readers or customer.
