Abstract

This research paper presents the politeness strategies in an American movie based on the novel entitled The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger. The writer analyzed the three main characters in the movie. There were two objectives of the research as follows: (1) to find out the models of politeness discourse performed by the main characters in Lauren Weisberger‟s Movie: „The Devil Wears Prada‟ (2) to describe the politeness strategies employed by the main characters according to Brown and Levinson‟s used by Lauren Weisberger‟s Movie: „The Devil Wears Prada‟. This research applied Brown and Levinson‟s theory (1987). The research was a qualitative research. The data were in the form of utterances by the three main characters containing politeness strategies. The source of the data was the script of Devil Wears Prada movie. At first, the writer read all the script and then identified and analyzed the dialogues containing politeness strategies. It was found that there were 135 politeness strategies that occured: Bald On Record (47 times), Positive Politeness (49 times), Negative Politeness (19 times), and Off Record (20 times). Therefore, it can be concluded that positive politeness strategies are the most frequent strategies in this movie. It indicates that the main characters tend to use positive politeness to show their respect and show that they have a good relationship since the situation is in the workplace.
