Abstract

This research paper entitled A Conversation Analysis of Turn Taking Mechanism in The Ellen Degeneres Show “Hillary Clinton Gets Candid About Debate Drama” Published on October 14, 2016 is aimed to identify the kind of turn taking mechanism mostly occured and to analyze how the turn-taking mechanism occured in conversation between Ellen Degeneres and Hillary Clinton. The data were collected by downloading the video in YouTube and presented in the dialogue transcription and they were analysed by using descriptive qualitative method as the research design. The researcher used Sacks et al theory (1974) to analyse turn allocation units and turn construction units and Strenstrom’s theory (1994) to analyse turn taking strategy. This study reveals that turn taking mechanism are used by Ellen and Hillary Clinton in the conversation of The Ellen Degeneres Show. In turn allocation units, current speaker selects-self is mostly occured (64.10%) because the current speaker did not select the next speaker and none of the participant of the conversation did self-selection. In turn construction units, a single lexical clause obtains the highest percentage (49.34%) and conjuction words such as “because”, “that”, “and” are mostly used. Finally, in turn taking mechanism, taking over was mostly applied (33.78%) because when the first speaker finished his turn, the listener gave relevant responses to the first speaker’s statement or question. Then, the listener took the position of the first speaker.
