Abstract

Language is a tool to communicate with each other. By language people can know each other because it can understand what the other around us say, so that is never missunderstanding. That is the reason why the researcher arranged this thesis. The aims of the research to know the kinds of figurative languagse used in Avril Lavigne’s song and to know the most dominant figurative language used in Avril Lavigne’s song lyric of “The Best Damn Thing” Album. The theory which used in this thesis is Kate Kearns (2000) explain about Modern Linguistic Semantic. The techniques of collecting data used by the researcher are listening to the songs, reading the lyrics, identifying all the lyrics, giving mark or underlined the lyrics containing figurative language. After processing the data that have been obtained from the song lyrics, the researcher could conclude that the figurative languages found in The Best Damn Thing Album by Avril Lavigne is varied. The reseracher draws conclusions the result of research and the figurative language often used by Avril Lavigne in her songs of The Best Damn Thing Album. This thesis is expected to improve the readers in understanding the figurative language.
