Abstract

This research paper entitled The Dialect Recognized In Selected News Items Of The Jakarta Post Issued In April 2017. It is aimed to find out the dialects in The Jakarta Post online newspaper. This research consists of 10 news items which are taken from The Jakarta Post started from 1st April 2017 to 10th April 2017. The researcher selected 7 categories of what makes news which is conflict, local news, money, health, human interest, food and crime. The study is designed in descriptive qualitative research. It based on the theory of dialects by Holmes (2001) and Chaer (2003). To analyze the data, the researcher use three methods from Miles and Huberman (1984) which is data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings of the grammar use by both varieties is the greatest is 594 (84,6%), followed by American English is 91 (13%) and the least is British English which only 17 (2,4%). As for vocabulary differences it was found out that 2 out of 250 expressions and the meaning only one expression. The greatest differences is in the spelling was due to the spelling rules by Noah Webster. It clearly written in the news report such as color, meter, defense, program, favorite, customize, previsualize and capitalize. It shows that the journalists create the writing style which was influenced by his/her social background. The findings show that the dialect use in The Jakarta Post online newspaper was strongly influenced by American English.
