Abstract
This study discusses on female social construct and the effects portrayed in Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey with using feminism approach. To analyze the problem, the researcher uses the qualitative method and the researcher applies the Kate Millet’s theory which is the root of the book Sexual Politics that was published in 1969. In Northanger Abbey the social construct is adopted by female, and female is defined as the concept of society. Female characters are declared clearly that female must be submissive, unintelligent, feminine and have lots of virtue. The stigma that male is superior can create the arrogant feature and causes the oppression to female. The oppression to female are categorized as the physical oppression and psychological oppression. Superior concept is the stigma that should be rejected because it can influence the thought of person to do the harassment and violence to the others.
