Abstract
The current study is a reader response study which aimed to investigate American work ethic in Robert Zemmecki’s movie Forrest Gump. This study started from common understanding that literature can portray the values and ethics of society. Thus, Forest Gump movie was taken as research object because it has characters which depict psychological aspects. This study is descriptive qualitative which applies reader response approach. Reader response approach focuses on how readers can complete certain literary work by responding to the work based on one’s experiences and understandings. Based on this approach, literary work can be a complete one, if the reader responds to it, and without response from readers, literature work cannot be categorized as complete. Bleich (1978) states that there are two points of responses (1) the reader’s spontaneous ‘response’ to a text and (2) the ‘meaning’ the reader attributed to it. The result of this study showed that most of events and happenings related to the professional life, were in line with several American Work Values proposed by Bernstein (1997), such as: hard work, job insecurity, opportunity, protestant values, and the existences of deserving and undeserving poor. The notion of work values and work ethics proposed by Bernstein (1997) were found in the movie. Most of events and happenings related to the professional life, were in line with several American Work Values proposed by him, such as: hard work, job insecurity, opportunity, protestant values, and the existences of deserving and undeserving poor. All of those values were found in the movie. As main character, Forrest either experienced them or witnessed other characters experiencing them. Through the movie, the factuality of Bernstein’s theory, was asserted and proved. In conclusion from analysis of this movie proved that both hard work and protestant values become the center of Americans’ life. As main character, Forrest experienced both hard work and religious values while witnessing other characters also stress the importance of those values.
