Abstract

This thesis has two objectives: to describe the types of communication strategies employed by JokoWidodo in APEC CEO Summit Speech and to interpret howJokoWidodo employed the communication strategies in his APEC CEO Summit Speech. The data is analyzed by using Brown and Levinson (1987). The data is the speech presented byJokoWidodo in APEC CEO Summit. The source of the data in this research a transcription talk based to be downloaded from https:// www.kompasiana.com. After analyzing the data, there are 49 translation strategiesin the data. It can be seen that the highest number of the communication strategy is positive politeness strategy with 44 utterances or 89.8%. It happens because Mr. JokoWidodo wants to offer investment to the CEO APEC. He explains all of the Indonesian Government and he also tells the entire problem and solving if the audiences want to invest in Indonesia. So, positive politeness strategy is mostly used to shows his appreciation, approval, interest and also familiarity with hearer. To make the analysis clearer, some categories based on Brown and Levinson‟s framework (1987), there are 15 strategies of politeness strategy. However, there are only2 strategies found in the data. The first strategy is Positive Politeness and I found notice, attend to hearer (his interest, wants, needs, goods) with 19 utterances. It becomes the higher frequently used by Mr. JokoWidodo during the speech. It happens because he tries to show his intention and gratitude to the all Summit audiences. Assert the speaker‟s knowledge and concern for the hearer‟s desire with 8 utterances, intensify interest to hearer with 6 utterances, give or ask for reason with 3 utterances, exaggerate (interest, approval, sympathy with the hearer) 2 utterances. Offer/Promise is 2 utterance, Be optimistic 2 utterances, seek agreement 1 utterance and include both speaker and hearer in the activity with each 1 utterance. The second strategy is bald on record with 5 utterances. It happens because Mr. JokoWidodo tries to be direct in the speech. Then, the FTA, negative politeness and off record are not found in the data since the genre of the data is speech, so those strategies rarely found in that genre it can be concluded thatpositive politeness strategy is mostly used to shows his appreciation, approval, interest and also familiarity with hearer in JokoWidodo speech.
