Abstract
This research paper presents the politeness strategies used in William Shakespeare drama entitled Antony and Cleopatra. The researcher analyzed the two main characters in the drama script. There were two objectives of the research as follows: (1) to find out the types of politeness strategies used by the main characters on Antony and Cleopatra drama by William Shakespeare. (2) to explain the way politeness strategies are employed by the main characters on Antony and Cleopatra drama by William Shakespeare. This research applied Brown and Levinson‟s theory (1987). The research was a qualitative research. The data were in the form of utterances by the two main characters containing politeness strategies. The source of the data was the script of Antony and Cleopatra drama. At first, the researcher read all the script and then identified and analyzed the dialogues containing politeness strategies. It was found that there were 83 politeness strategies that occured: Bald On Record (10 times), Positive Politeness (43 times), Negative Politeness (21 times), and Off Record (9 times). Therefore, it can be concluded that positive politeness strategies are the most frequent strategies in this drama. It indicates that the main characters tend to use positive politeness to show the social variable and relationship between queen and her subordinates in old kingdom.
