Abstract
This final project is written based on Freudian psychoanalysis. It is aimed to investigate the cruelty and abuses in the drama “The Conduct of Life” written by Maria Irene Fornes. The drama contains various abuses from main character, named Orlando. Therefore, this study provided the analysis based on psychoanalysis. It provided the analysis of abuse from Freudian Psychoanalytic Framework. The study is descriptive qualitative one. The unit of analysis are some selected scripts which represent cruelty of the main character. The result showed that the main character has been desensitized morally due to his job. The desensitization, along with the tension between his id and superego, has put much pressure in his ego, causing him to overly display his power by abusing others. Furthermore, the repression of his anxiety also causes a defense mechanism named reaction-formation and regression which made him acts oppositely, e.g. showing love by raping and abusing people. As main character, Orlando displayed physical, sexual, and verbal abuse. The abuse and cruelty which he has done caused him many misfortunes, such as being doubted by people and finally he was killed by his wife. Summarizing the findings, the writer concluded that this drama is about the violence which happens due to psychological repressions, psyche‘s tension between id and superego, and the reaction-formation and regression as ego defense mechanism which comes from the psyche‘s tension itself.
