Abstract
This study is descriptive qualitative study, focused in discussing the oppression in intellectuality that is reflected in Charlotte Perkin Gilman‘s short story ―The Yellow Wallpaper‖ in 1892. This short story represents a tragic story of a woman‘s depression and madness, the main character is a woman who is being submissive to man (her husband). As a part of feminism study, the researcher used feminism approach and it focuses on the explanation on how does the female character gets oppression by using de Beauvoir theory (1949). The oppression that the researcher found in this story is oppression in intellectuality. The reason why the researcher conducts this research is because the issue of women oppression does not only happen in 19 th century, but it still exists in this 21 th century. This is also to make the reader realize that the oppression is not only happened in physical form, but also in intellectuality form. There are also some differences about the details of the issue from both centuries, but the researcher just focuses on analyzing of the women oppression on the 19 th century which is reflected in Gilman‘s story. The results obtained in this study is woman oppression happens because of the female character suffers from depression, and her husband mistreat her and ignore all what she said.
