Abstract

Maternal sensitivity critical to the development of child compliance, self- regulation skills, and other internalized controls. The mother figure in this short story is described as a mother who had to work to provide the income, shelter and food for her daughter, Emily. She could not choose Emily‘s day care providers or her teachers when Emily became old enough to attend school. Emily is abandoned by her mother when she was a baby with no awareness of herself as an independent being. She suffers from the anxiety of being separated from her mother. In this study, the writer focuses on analyzing maternal sensitivity and attachment influence in establishment of child‘s behavior portrayed in Tillie Olsen‘s short story: I Stand Here Ironing. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative method since it provides a systematic, factual, and accurate description of a situation of area. The object of the study is the maternal sensitivity and attachment influence in the establishment of children‘s behavior in I Stand Here Ironing by Tillie Olsen. The writer uses library research, it refers to activities which are done by using library facilities. Based on the discussion, the writer concludes that Maternal sensitivity is very important in the development of children‘s behavior in Tillie Olsen‘s I Stand Here Ironing, because the absence of the sensitivity from a mother to her daughter will result suffering mentally and sometimes physically. Failing to be a cared daughter, a good student, a beautiful and independent girl, Emily is desperately caught in an identity crisis. She is constantly tortured by the sense of lack and is too vulnerable and fragile to stand all these life pressures.
