Abstract
The research examined “The Codes Switched in a Casual Conversation set by English Students and a German”. The data of the study were taken by recording the casual conversation by English Students and a German, which were then analyzed on the bases of code switching theory. The results show that there are forty four (44) code switchings covering the intersentential code switching (15), tag switching (17), intrasentential code switching (8), internal code switching (2), external code switching (1), situational code switching (1). There are sixteen (16) code switching of English to Indonesia, nine (9) code switching of Indonesia to English, four (4) code switching of German to English, ten (10) code switching of English to German, two (2) code switching of English to Javanese, one (1) code switching of Japan to English, one (1) code switching of Indonesia to Arab and one (1) code switching of Arab to English. Tag switching is the highest frequency that occurs in participants in casual conversation between English students and a German because they involve inserting a tag in one language to an utterance. The reasons which drive the participants to switch codes are: to convey precious meaning (19.72%), to capture attention (8.45%), to ease communication (35.21%), to emphasize point (25.35%) and to communicate more effectively (11.27%).
