Abstract

Language is a tool to communicate with each other. By the language people can know each other because they will not misunderstand each other around them say. That is the reason why the researcher arranged this thesis. The aims of the research are to know the kinds of language style used and to know the dominant type of language style used in The Break up Man movie. The data of the thesis are taken from a movie entitled “The Break up Man”. This study based on the theory of language style used by Martin Joos. The techniques of collecting data used by the researcher are downloading the movie from internet; the script of the movie, identifying, classifying, and interpreting. After processing the data that have been obtained from the movie script, the researcher could conclude that there are four styles used in The Break up Man movie; formal style, informal style, casual style, and intimate style. Based on that conclusion, the dominant style used in The Break up Man Movie is informal style. From the analysis, it can be shown how, with whom, and the way we use the language in different situation and occupation, with different status and ages.
