Abstract
The current study was a psychoanalytic study which aims to analyze ego defense mechanism and internal conflicts of protagonist and antagonist of The Final Problem. This study began by shared knowledge that characters in literature also display psychological aspects the way real human beings do. This study was descriptive qualitative which applies Psychoanalytic Approach. This approach focuses on human’s psyche altogether with ego defense mechanism of the characters. It also applies Freud’s theory on triparttie ego defense mechanism. Characters are treated like human being and analyzed psychologically. The analysis started by findings the id, ego, and superego for both protagonist and antagonist. Then, the ego defense mechanism and internal conflicts of protagonist and antagonist are also analyzed. The results showed that the protagonist and antagonist have unique defense mechanism. Sherlock as the protagonist experienced repression, displacement, and reaction formation. While Eurus as the antagonist experienced regression in her hallucination. Those ego defense mechanisms caused internal conflicts for both characters. For Sherlock, the internal conflict relates to him being a cold emotionless man, while for Eurus, the internal conflict relates to her doing many crimes and murders in order to fulfill her id.
