Abstract
This study fell under the category of psychological study of literature. This study had two purposes which investigate (a) What are the causes of depression that are found in William Traynor, (b) What are the effects of depression that are found in William Traynor? and (c) How does William Traynor react to the depression based on Aaroon Beck theory? This study was descriptive qualitative one based on psychological theory about depression proposed by Beck and Aldor (2009). The theory is about three negative schemas experienced by patients of depression. Therefore, in this study, the character is seen as human being and analyzed psychologically. The analysis is outlined by finding and matching the character’s behavior in his depressed phases. The behavior of the character became the object of analysis. Therefore, the data are the dialogue, inner thought, and how other characters describe him. The results showed that there are several causes, effects and the react of the depression experienced by William Traynor, as the main character of “Me Before You”, namely idealization of past, devaluation of present condition, negative self-judgement, constant negative thoughts which are based on his own judgements, and unacceptance of his present state. The writer noticed two important aspects: the first aspect is the unacceptance of current condition which lead to paralysis of will. The second aspect is the idealization of past which lead to escaping and suicidal tendency.
