Abstract

The thesis deals with Leslea Newman's novel, Hachiko Waits. In the thesis the writer learns that Hachiko is an intelligent dog and have a tremendous loyalty. Namely, he remains loyal and consistent to wait until 10 years for his master to be with his master again. Here, the writer wanted to know why Hachiko remain loyally waited and never forget his master up to 10 years. The purpose of this thesis is to show and explain about the loyalty of Hachiko which has waited for his master for 10 years and other Hachiko‟s speciality as an Akita breed. The writer uses the Reader-Response Citicism as the theory in analyzing it. Thus, in this thesis the writer concludes that all done by Hachiko are normal thing as all the descendants of Akita breed. They express their gratitude to his master who had treated them well. Akita is a dog breed that has a tremendous loyalty, discipline and responsibility, because in fact they are not dogs to be maintained but the dogs used for fighting and hunting. So as a descendant of Akita breed the natural of Hachiko is different from other dogs. The people at that time were all amazed at the Hachiko‟s loyalty that never ending until he dies. Hachiko was eventually used as a symbol of loyalty in Japan and the story of Hachiko‟s loyalty continues to be told from generation to generation until now.
