Abstract

This research examines the codes switched in Checked Order Meeting Applied by Taiwanese and Indonesian Workers of PT. Grand Best Indonesia. Specifically, the research is aimed at finding out the types of code switching performed by the participants of the checked order meeting, and explaining the reasons for the participants to switch the codes. The data of the study were taken by recording the meeting, which were then analyzed on the bases of code switching theory. The results show that there are ninety eight (98) code switchings covering the inter-sentential code switching and intra-sentential code switching twenty seven (27) of which are codes switching of Indonesian - English, thirty four (34) code switching of Chinese - Indonesian, thirty seven (37) code switching of Mandarin – English. The reasons which drive the participants to switch codes are: to ease communication, i.e., utilizing the shortest and the easiest route ( 37,8% ), to communicate more effectively ( 27,5% ), to convey exact meaning ( 19,4% ), to reiterate point ( 9,2% ), to identify with a particular group ( 5,1% ) and to capture attention, i.e. stylistic, emphatic, emotional ( 1,0% ).
