Abstract
This thesis is entitled “THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL CONDITION TOWARD THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE HOUSE ON HOPE STREET”. The discussion is expected to find out the social condition around the main character in the novel. Library research is used to collect data from many sources related to the analysis. There are two approaches used in this thesis: psychological and sociological approaches. Psychological approach is used to analyze attitude, characterization and behavior of human life. Sociological approach is employed to find out the sociological aspect of the condition around the main character. The object of study is a novel “The House on Hope Street”. It tells about the main character’s life, named Liz as a wife, a mother and a lawyer. It begins when her husband passed away. She becomes single parent and has to handle her husband duty. The conditions are narrated by Danielle Steel as a reflection of woman struggle in modern era. A society can learn to be stronger, not only to be individualistic, tougher, but also learn how to respect everybody who needs us. From the novel, the writer can find the characterization of the main character. Liz is a good mother for her children; she is also a good wife for her husband. Liz is a good friend for her clients, she always tries to be there, when her client need her, gives attention to her client’s condition, fighting for her client’s life to be better. Liz is a good worker; she always does her work with her full responsibility and accuracy. Behind her strength, Liz is also a coward woman. She almost worries about something that actually is not as a bad as she thinks about. Liz’s habit changes after the death of her husband. She does not like to bring the job home , but after Jack’s death she brings her job home and works until late at night.
