Abstract

The study attempts to analyze the personality structures of person which is reflected in Catherine Morland as a main character in Northanger Abbey novel based on Freudian psychology theory. The thesis entitled “The Maturation of Catherine Reflected in Jane Austen‟s Northanger Abbey: A Freudian Psychology.” It has three research questions, they are: (1) What is the character and characterization of Catherine Morland as main character?(2) What is the parameter of Catherine Morland‟s personality? (3) How is the maturation of Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey?. The writer wants to explore the three important structures of Catherine‟s personality, they are id, ego and superego until she finds herself become a mature. This study used qualitative method and psychological approach, especially Freudian psychology to analyze this thesis. The data source of this research used Jane Austen‟s Northanger Abbey novel. Techniques of data collection is done by reading the novel repeatedly and classified into psychoanalysis aspects. The data analysis is done by classifying the data, describing the results of classification and interpreting it. To analyze psychology aspect of Catherine, the writer begins to analyze her character and characterization through telling and showing method. It is the simple method to understand deeply Catherine‟s character and characterization. Then, based on Freudian psychology, the writer emphasized tothe parameter of Catherine Morland‟s personality structures in the novel. After reading and analyze deeply, it can be concluded that impulses of the id makes person thought without a reason, logic and moral. From the id, ego acts as decision maker for the next action, in the other words, ego is logical and rational act. But when the ego has reached at the defense mechanism and accepting the function of superego, it will form Catherine‟s maturation and achieve anything that she was needed in her growth.
