Abstract
This research examines the thematic progression (TP) pattern in the reading texts of the textbook for 10 th graders. The textbook is borrowed from the library of State Senior High School 4 Semarang. The sentences of the reading texts of the textbook are analyzed to know their thematic patterning on the bases of Danes’ theory (1974). The result of this research shows that the constant TP pattern (26.4 %) is the dominant pattern. The simple linier TP also found in the text (22.4 %). The theme derived (23 %) and the split rheme (25.8 %) also appear in the text. Researcher also found three new TP patterns which are named by researcher as the constant linier TP pattern (1.2 %), the extra compound theme TP pattern (0.6 %) and the compound theme TP pattern (0.6 %). With these phenomena, it can be seen that the differences emerging thematic progression patterns in the textbook are not significant. So, researcher concludes that maybe the writer of the text wants to give some variations in developing text. Perhaps, 10 th grade which is the starting point of Senior High School and needs a lot of references in developing theme to build a good paragraph. The writer of the text may not want to give dull or boring text in this textbook. It is suggested that further researchers may conduct similar studies by employing different data and schematic structure analysis on the textbook.
