Abstract

This thesis gives some information about comparative study between literal meaning and nonliteral meaning in “ A Tear And A Smile” Kahlil Gibran’s Poem. Besides, the poem of Kahlil Gibran’s usually using nonliteral meaning such as personification, hiperbole, metonymy, metaphore etc to make a poem much more beautiful and full of meaning. The writes also analyze the subject matter based on semantic. To analyze the subject matter, the writer firstly gathers the information from the relevant books related to the subject matter and also collecting the data taken from “A Tear And A Smile” Kahlil Gibran’s Poem. To make the data are going to be identified each of stanza to be classification in literal meaning and nonliteral meaning.to make an easy analysis they will be presented in a table form. At last, the literal meaning and nonliteral meaning in “ A Tear And A Smile” Kahlil Gibran’s Poem will be interpreted by the writer with relaying on chapter II as guidance. Based on the description of the step analysis above, the result of the research are hopefully close to what the writer and readers want. All the interpretation of literal meaning and nonliteral meaning in “A Tear And A Smile” Kahlil Gibran’s Poem will still rely on chapter II and the writer’s perspective as the reader. In conclusion, literal meaning and nonliteral meaning in “A Tear And A Smile” Kahlil Gibran’s Poem has been analyzed that most dominantly is personification in nonliteral meaning with 77%.
