Abstract
The thesis entitled The Illocutionary Acts Performed in Mariah Carey‘s Selected Songs. In this thesis, the research would like to identify the meaning of utterances within lyrics in terms of speech act. The thesis has an objectives, it is aimed to find out the taxonomies of acts performed in Mariah Carey‘s selected songs. The analysis in this thesis is based on pragmatics that is to discuss illocutionary acts, especially the taxonomy of acts. The writer use descriptive qualitative technique to analyze the research. Types of illocutionary acts are performed in 106 utterances namely: 52 representative utterances: 19 statement (17,92%), 24 information (22,64%), 6 confession (5,66%) and 3 blames (2,83%); 13 directive utterances: 5 order (4,72%), 1 request (0,94%), 2 suggestion (1,89%), 3 question (2,83%) and 2 prohibition (1,89%); 11 commissive utterances: 11 pledge (10,38%); 9 expressive utterances: 4 gratitude (3,77%), 3 complaint (2,83%) and 2 regret (1,89%); 21 declarative utterances: 14 declaration (13,21%) and 7 denial (6,6%). The illocutionary act which most frequently performed are information (22,64%). It means the song author wants to inform the listener about something. Thus, the song author conveys the information through the songs.
