Abstract
The writer’s thesis is about the main character of a clever, diligent, and tough woman named Sayuri in Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha. In this thesis the writer wants to discus the main character, struggle of life of the main character, the setting and also the struggle of life of the main character as the effect of pressure from society. The objectives of the study are to find out the main character in Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha,to find out the setting both the setting of place and time and also to find out the struggle of life of the main character as the effect of pressure from the society in Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha. The writer uses two methods in order to analyze the thesis. First, method of the study; in this case, she uses the library research. Second, she uses the method of approach that contains sociological, structural, and psychological approach. Sayuri is a smart beautiful, talented woman. She is also a tough woman and has strong willingness, for examples Sayuri has a dream to meet again with a man who she admire, the Chairman. But to realize her dream it is not a simply thing, it needs a lot sacrifice to make it happen. Sayuri has to struggle fight the pressure from her society. A geisha who life in the same okiya, Hatsumomo, does not want her reputation fades away because of Sayuri’s beauty. Hatsumomo treats her badly to send Sayuri away, meanwhile to be a geisha she has to learn the complicated art of geisha; she also has to learn how to beguile the most powerful men to be her patron. Sayuri have to struggle to overcome the pressure that she gets from society to be the most successful geisha in order to meet the Chairman again. Kyoto, Japan is used as the setting of place in this thesis, while the setting of time in the 1930 when Gion, a district of geisha in Kyoto is in golden era but suddenly the World War II outbreak in Japan and made the situation being worst.
